The Utah Highway Patrol is apparently being used as a front by a thief trying to withdraw money from local banks.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Verdi R. White said a man claiming to be a UHP officer attempted to withdraw money at two banks for a person that was involved in a traffic accident. The man also contacted the company where the accident victim worked. The man told the banks and the company he was acting on behalf of the victim, who he said needed money, White said. The phony trooper requested that the money be wired to a specific location in care of him, White said.

Before acting on the request, bank employees tried to verify the requests and found that they were fraudulent, said White.

White said legitimate law enforcement agency employees will not ask firms or people to send money to them on behalf of anyone.
