Citing the extreme hazard from this summer's hot and dry weather, the Farmington City Council Wednesday approved Fire Chief Larry Gregory's request for a moratorium on all outside burning.

The ban applies to the city's rural as well as urban areas, banning the burning of fields and agricultural waste until the fire season ends this fall. It also covers unincorporated county areas west of the city limits that are protected by the department under contract.Barbecues and other fires in containers or approved burning pits are exempt from the ban, according to the chief.

The department responded to 25 fire calls last month, Gregory reported, and 22 medical calls, totaling 47 responses. That compares with 31 responses in June of last year.
