A Davis Jail inmate first flooded his cell and unit Monday night and then tried to strangle himself, according to Davis County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Kevin McLeod. But McLeod said corrections officers are credited with saving his life.

The 24-year-old Clearfield man pulled a fire sprinkler head off the ceiling in his cell, flooding it and the cell unit, McLeod said. He was transferred to a cell in the jail's medical unit and corrections officers checking on him a few minutes later found him unconscious after he'd twisted a pillowcase and sheet around his neck, McLeod said. The inmate was revived and did not need further medical treatment, McLeod said.

He credited corrections officers Mike McNamara, David Ohrn and Ray Prochet with saving the inmate's life by checking on him frequently and acting quickly when they found him unconscious.

The incident occurred between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday, McLeod said. The inmate was booked into the jail Sept. 1 and faces several charges, McLeod said, including violation of a protective order, theft, drugs and criminal trespass.
