A teenager was fighting for his life Thursday morning after being severely burned inside a power substation.
Jeffrey A. Dalzen, 17, Provo, suffered head injuries and burns over 37 percent of his body in the Tuesday night incident. He was listed in critical and unstable condition at the Intermountain Burn Center in Salt Lake City.Provo Police Lt. Mark West said Dalzen scaled a 10- to 12-foot-high barbed-wire fence to gain access to the Provo City substation at 4525 N. Timpview Drive. The teenager climbed onto a transformer and was apparently thrown off when he came in contact with the electricity, he said.
Provo paramedics were called to the scene at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday. They found Dalzen lying on the ground inside the fence. Emergency workers cut off a lock on a gate to reach the boy.
West said officials don't know why Dalzen climbed into the substation.
