When Rage Against the Machine launches its first volley of hard-rock sounds next week, police here will be patrolling on shiny new stealth-like machines of their own - bicycles.

Police Chief Dee Rosenbaum said he likes the bicycles because they offer a quiet approach to catching criminals in the act. Two officers will be using them to patrol residential areas near the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds where people attending the concert on Sept. 11 will park. The police department recently purchased two bicycles that will be shared by about half a dozen officers. The 21-speed mountain bikes work well for special-event patrols and at night when illegal activity may be taking place under cover of darkness, Rosenbaum said.

The bikes won't be used on a regular shift, but are handy when a marked patrol car won't work as well, he said.
