Detectives were still looking Friday for a pair of robbery suspects who shot at a Sandy police officer.
The episode began early Thursday when two men armed with a shotgun and a knife walked into the Willow Inn (11357 S. State) and robbed the tavern owner and several customers. Two patrons were kicked during the heist as an apparent show of intimidation, said Sandy Police Sgt. David Lundberg.
Moments later, a Sandy K-9 officer pulled over a truck with two occupants fitting the description of the robbery suspects.
As the officer stepped out of his patrol truck, one of the passengers leaned out of his truck with a shotgun and fired one shot, said Lundberg.
The buckshot embedded in the driver side door where the officer was standing. The officer was not injured.
The robbery suspects then sped off. The officer gave chase through a Midvale neighborhood where the duo ditched their truck and ran away on foot.
A shotgun and several items stolen from the tavern were found inside or near the truck.
Several police agencies spent the day scouring the area for the men and tracking down the registered owner of the getaway truck.
