Hundreds of Utah County residents will join together Wednesday, Sept. 11, to perform service projects for local nonprofit agencies through United Way of Utah County's Day of Caring.

The volunteer event replaces the annual campaign kick-off luncheon held by the United Way of Utah County each year.Volunteers from local companies, including Geneva Steel, Brigham Young University, Office of Family Support, Intermountain Health Care, Key Bank, Novell and Utah Valley State College, will unite in the service celebration.

Support of the event has been tremendous, said Bill Hulterstrom, United Way of Utah County president. Not only will the volunteers provide vital service, they will also witness first-hand the important role of human service agencies in the community.

The event begins at 8 a.m. with a kick-off breakfast on the north lawn of the Utah County Building in Provo. Musician and composer Becky Hobbs will sing "Angels Among Us." Hobbs wrote the song for the group Alabama. She will be accompanied by Utah Valley s International Children s Choir.

At 9:15 a.m., volunteers will separate into their service project groups. Projects will include assembling a storage shed and picnic tables, painting, rewiring computer and phone systems, landscaping, refurbishing a flag pole, turning a storage room into a child visitation room and preparing food boxes for low-income families.

The agencies benefiting from these services include Recreation and Habilitation, Family Support and Treatment Center, Community Action Services and Habitat for Humanity.
