Chan K'in Viejo, the spiritual leader of the Lacandon Indians in southeastern Mexico, has died after an illness of several months. His son said he was 104.
Kayum Garcia said his father died Dec. 23 at home and was buried the following day.Chan K'in Viejo was made famous by German photographer Gertrude Blum, whose images of the Lacandons in the 1930s, 40s and 50s brought the plight of their endangered culture to international attention.
