DEMO SUPPORTS BID TO KEEP FORT DOUGLAS A FEDERAL SITE

Sen. Blaze Wharton, D-Murray, is providing supporting fire for the Army in its efforts to remain at Fort Douglas.

The senator has introduced a resolution that would support maintaining federal title to an 11-acre parcel in Fort Douglas that Olympic organizers want for an Olympic village, which later would become student housing at the University of Utah.Wharton has not suggested an alternative location for the Olympics housing. "That's not my job," he said Tuesday.

Wharton is concerned that the feud will spoil the state's relationship with the Army, which has a local payroll of about $17 million.

He also does not want to lose the historical structures at Fort Douglas. The Army's presence at the site dates back to the Civil War.
