Gateway 2000 to reassign or give severance to 300

Gateway 2000 Inc. said Tuesday about 300 of its employees will either be reassigned to new jobs or offered severance packages as part of an ongoing restructuring.

The big mail-order computer vendor said it continues to hire workers "in areas to support its anticipated sales volumes."Gateway, based in North Sioux City, S.D., said it expects to end the year at its current staffing level, which is about 12,000 employees.

In early September, Gateway warned it would report disappointing third-quarter profits due to price wars, product delays and troubles from a strike at United Parcel Service.

Gateway plans to open a new $20 million manufacturing plant in Salt Lake City by next spring.
