Hurricanes finally win, beat Devils 2-1

Steve Leach scored on a rebound with 10:40 left, and Carolina defeated the New Jersey Devils 2-1 Friday night - the Hurricanes' first victory since moving from Connecticut.

Carolina caught a break on Leach's game-winner when Martin Brodeur - one of the best goaltenders in the NHL - misplayed the initial shot from Robert Kron just inside the blue line.Kron's blast appeared to be wide, but Brodeur tried to stop the high shot with his blocker. It bounded out of control, to his left and right onto the stick of Leach, who was streaking down the slot and slammed the puck into the open net.

The Hurricanes, last in the league in penalty minutes, killed a hooking infraction to Stu Grimson with 6:15 left, and Trevor Kidd made three key saves over the final three minutes to preserve the win.

Red Wings 3, Lightning 0

At Detroit, Chris Osgood stopped 29 shots for his 15th career shutout and Detroit remained the NHL's only perfect team with a victory over Tampa Bay.

Joey Kocur, Igor Larionov and Darren McCarty scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions as the Red Wings began 4-0 for the first time since the 1972-73 team won its first six.

Stars 7, Blackhawks 0

At Dallas, Mike Modano had three goals and an assist, and Ed Belfour needed only 14 saves in his first game against his former team as the Dallas Stars routed the pointless Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago (0-4-0) is off to its worst start since the 1969-70 season.

Mighty Ducks 1, Senators 1

At Anaheim, Calif., Anaheim rookie Espen Knutsen scored his first NHL goal in the third period as the Mighty Ducks tied Ottawa.
