3 Utahns are killed in 2 road accidents

Three Utahns were killed in two vehicle accidents Friday and Saturday.

Killed were:Dave Ewell, 57, Midvale.

Tracy Lynne Hardman, 26, Vernal.

Ryan Neal Caldwell, 19, Fruit Heights.

Ewell and Hardman were killed in a head-on collision Friday night on U-40 near Daniels Canyon.

About 9:50 p.m. Friday, at mile post 44 a full-size pickup truck driven by Ewell was headed west. The truck drifted across the center line and into the path of an eastbound Jeep, driven by Hardman, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at Wasatch County hospital in Heber City. A passenger in the Jeep, Claudia Fletcher, 45, Vernal, was flown by helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Troopers said none of the accident victims was wearing a seat belt. An investigation into accident is continuing.

- Caldwell was killed when his truck drove off Farmington Canyon Saturday night.

Caldwell was descending Farmington Canyon about 6 p.m. when for an unknown reason his truck went off the road, said Davis County Sheriff's Lt. Roger Anderson.

Caldwell's grandmother, Beverly Caldwell, Fruit Heights, said her grandson called a friend after work about 5:15 p.m. saying he wanted to go up the canyon and check the snow levels. His friend, however, could not go and Caldwell left alone.

A passerby saw the tire tracks going off the road about 1 1/2 miles up the canyon and called police, Anderson said.

Caldwell was thrown from the truck and found about 100 feet down the side of the road. The truck kept rolling about 50 more feet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
