Preps of week

LOGAN TOM, Highland: Junior volleyball star pounded down 17 kills to lead the Rams past Region 5 rival East last week.

Fourth-ranked Highland (6-2) has been on a roll since Tom, a first team all-stater, returned from an ankle injury a couple of weeks ago."We just have a lot more hitting power with her back," says Highland coach Kim Nelson. "She's just a very good overall player."

Tom, who's perhaps the best-ever girls volleyball player from Utah, will be featured in the Nov. 3 issue of Sports Illustrated. The powerful hitter spent last summer playing for the U.S. National Junior Team, including a trip to Brazil.

SHANE WOOD, Cyprus: Senior running back ran for 112 yards and scored five touchdowns in just over a half of play

against Judge last week.

"He's got a lot of real good talent - good speed and good power," says Cyprus coach Dave Peck. "He can run away from ya or run ya over."

Wood has averaged 121 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Pirates to a 5-2 record. He scored four touchdowns in a victory over Bountiful and broke loose with a 90-yard TD run with less than a minute to go for the game's only score against East.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pounder benches 310 pounds and squats 500. He's also been timed running a 4.51 40.
