The Home Depot is the latest sponsor of the 2002 Winter Games and also will support the U.S. and Canadian Olympic teams through 2004. The sponsorship is expected to be worth as much as $50 million in cash, goods and services.
Officials of the company, North America's largest home improvement retailer, were to announce the deal Thursday afternoon at one of their Salt Lake stores.Home Depot will join General Motors, US WEST, Texaco and Seiko as sponsors of the 2002 Winter Games, signed through a joint marketing venture between the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Under the deal, Utah's Olympic organizers will split the money earned with the USOC. About one-fourth of the $1 billion cost of putting on the 2002 Winter Games will come from these corporate sponsors.
