Fires destroy 1 home, damage another in W.V.

One house was destroyed and another badly damaged in separate fires Thursday in West Valley City.

Neighbors reported flames and smoke coming from a house at 3680 S. 4400 West at about 4:30 p.m. and called 911, said West Valley fire Capt. Joe Reardon. Crews got the fire under control within 45 minutes, but the home was already destroyed. The house was vacant and nobody was injured. Damage was estimated at $125,000. The flames reached a house next door and caused minor damage to its exterior. Investigators believe the fire was accidental.

Another residential blaze, at 4873 S. 3850 West, has forced a family of four to relocate. Neighbors saw smoke coming from the basement at about 8:30 p.m. and called for help.

Firefighters doused the blaze 20 minutes after arriving at the house. The fire destroyed the basement and caused smoke damage throughout the structure. The blaze caused more than $50,000 damage. The cause is unknown.

The house was rented by Kahamphay Saythong, who resided there with her husband and two children. The family plans to stay with relatives until they find a new place.

The children were at home when flames erupted in the basement, but escaped without injury.
