Death: Elizabeth ""Betty"" Dorny Peterson

Elizabeth (Betty) Dorny Peterson, age 88, passed away at Wasatch Valley Rehabilitation Hospital in Salt Lake City on Oct. 15, 1997 from causes incident to age.

Mrs. Peterson was born on March 6, 1909 to Emilie Augusta and Otto Dorny in Decatur, Illinois. Her family moved to Salt Lake City when she was eight weeks of age. She graduated with honors from West High School and attended the University of Utah.She married Willis Koerner Peterson on March 11, 1932 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and raised three sons. Friends and family knew her as a beautiful, sweet, tender and loving woman, who provided strength and compassion to every one around her.

Her professional career included working as an accountant for South East Furniture and as an administrator at Holy Cross Hospital.

Along with her husband, she became one of Utah's skiing pioneers. In the 1930's, they would often traverse on skis from Park City to Brighton and spend the night at the Wasatch Mountain Club cabin. The next day, they would ski over the pass to Alta and down the canyon because roads were not plowed in either Big or Little Cottonwood canyons in those days. She once even scaled and descended Lone Peak in the Winter on skis with her husband and other hardy skiers. Her three sons also became excellent skiers and raced competitively and taught skiing as well. Mrs. Peterson also enjoyed golf, gardening and reading.

Her husband, Willis, died Aug. 30, 1968. She is survived by two brothers, Walter O. (Veda) Dorny of Mesa, AZ; and Gordon R. (Audrey) Dorny of Salt Lake City; three sisters, Ruth Dorny, Helen Martin, and Jean Bell, all St. George; three sons, W. Gary (Merna) and Tim D. Peterson of Salt Lake City; and Jan D. (Amanda) Peterson of Park City; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 20, 12 noon, at Deseret Mortuary Lake Hills, 10055 So. State St., Sandy, UT 84070, where friends may call prior to the services 11-12 noon. Interment on site at Lake Hills Deseret Mortuary.
