Living by the scriptures

And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts? - Alma 5:14.

While walking home from Church after teaching a lesson about Alma the younger, I reflected upon the above scripture. On that day, I was overwhelmed with the notion of a mighty change.

As a schoolteacher I had experienced difficulties in the classroom. Taking workshops made me aware of how much of a change it would take to become a better teacher. The effort to transform seemed enormous.

Then a caterpillar diverted my attention. It was by the side of the road and miraculously alive in the summer heat. I claim ignorance when it comes to insects, and, just to fill a Sunday afternoon, I decided to learn about the caterpillar. I went directly to a set of encyclopedias and reached for the "C". All I found was a small disappointing paragraph about caterpillars. At the end I noticed a section for related articles. I was referred to the "B" encyclopedia under the heading of BUTTERFLY.

After turning to the "B" encyclopedia to learn about the potential of a caterpillar - of its amazing metamorphosis and emerging beauty as a butterfly - I have to believe in miracles. It gave me hope that I, like a caterpillar, can change to realize my potential.
