WOMEN'S SOCCER: Old resentments hung over the field today as the Utes marked their revenge over the Lady Bulldogs. Last season, Utah's 2-0 loss to Fresno State knocked them out of the WAC Championships. Saturday, in a 5-0 victory, the Utes boldly proclaimed their intentions of attending this year.

The Utes took control of the game early when Tara McNeil sent a ball to Aly Hill at the 3:04 mark. Freshman Lorrie Tipton put in two including an unassisted ball taken up-field from the half. Tara Mc-Neil came back to score a goal off a corner kick, and Staci Burt also headed one in. Bernie Hogan, Lorrie Tipton and Aly Hill also contributed assists.

"We had the disappointment from Thursday positively focusing our energy offensively and defensively," said coach Amy Freeman Winslow. "The athletes are very close as a team, and when they're on, they're on."

WOMEN'S SOCCER: BYU's 23rd-ranked women's soccer team overcame a sluggish start to defeat San Jose State 3-2 in a WAC contest Saturday night in Provo.

The win improves the Cougars record to 14-1, 3-1 while improving their home record to 7-0. The Spartans of San Jose fall to 7-6-1, 2-2.

"We came out a little flat," said coach Jennifer Rockwood. "But in the second half we created a lot of opportunities and came out on fire, scoring two quick ones, and then we finished with a lot of heart. This is definitely a big win for us."

The Spartans jumped to a halftime lead with a score by Blanca Salas, assisted by Christen Leonti at the 34:57 mark. The Cougars responded by coming out strong in the second half with two quick goals by Kim Lowe and Michelle Jensen. Lowe's goal came from a header assisted by Maren Hender-shot, while Jensen's score was the result of a Shauna Rohbock pass.

The Spartans tied the score at the 67:00 mark with a shot from Mani Aiu. Minutes later, BYU freshman Staci Reynold scored the game-winning goal with a deep shot that deflected off the goalie's hands.
