More than 3,000 homes and businesses in Taylorsville and Kearns were without electricity for more than an hour after a power substation went out Wednesday morning.
A 4,600 bolt circuit breaker and a lightning arrestor went out at 10:45 a.m. at the Taylorsville power substation, 2700 W. 5400 South, said Utah Power and Light spokesman Dave Eskelsen. The failure was caused by a damaged transformer. Eskelsen believes that because the problem involved a lighting arrestor, lightning may have struck the substation earlier this year and caused the damage.
"We have had quite a number of cases of lighting hitting our equipment when thunderstorms came through," Eskelsen said.
The power outage reached Kearns because the Taylorsville substation also feeds the Kearns substation, 5415 S. 4800 West, Eskelsen said.
