Park Service wants to add `greene' to colonial area

The National Park Service wants to return to Philadelphia's "greene" colonial roots with a new design for Independence Mall that calls for moving the Liberty Bell and emphasizing trees and lawns.

The master plan, which also calls for a new visitors center and a museum devoted to the Constitution, would try to better integrate Independence National Historical Park into the surrounding downtown. The city and a major donor like the design unveiled Wednesday. But funding must be obtained for the National Constitution Center and for a new home for the Liberty Bell, which draws 1.6 million visitors a year.

The project is expected to cost $55 million and could be finished as early as 2000.
