Whooping and sandhill cranes stand near Kent Clegg and his ultralight plane as the rancher-pilot checks the day's mileage after landing near Grants, N.M. Sunday's flight was uneventful, in contrast to Thursday's, when a whooping crane was attacked and injured by a golden eagle. Clegg's journey began Oct. 13 in Grace, Idaho, in an attempt to establish a new migratory path for the birds to New Mexico. Clegg raised the cranes from hatchlings so they would follow him anywhere.
