Plastic flamingos fly coop - thanks to thieves

A group that uses plastic, pink flamingos to raise money for a park has been winged - part of the flock has flown the coop.

Project organizers said 10 of the tacky lawn ornaments were stolen and aren't easily replaced, since it's fall. The birds are out of season at hardware stores."They cost about $10 each, so it's not exactly grand larceny," project spokeswoman Judi Free said. "But it happened at a bad time. It's kind of a thorn in our side right now."

The group has raised $4,000 by placing the lawn ornaments in yards and charging homeowners $25 to get rid of them. The homeowner decides on the next nesting place, a method that had the flamingos generating about $200 a week.
