WSU fall enrollment rises 9% from last year

Fall enrollment at Weber State University increased by 9 percent over fall 1996, university officials reported Monday.

The increase in budget-related enrollment is the largest in WSU history. The university's official, third-week report indicates an enrollment of 10,659 full-time equivalent students, up 872 from last year. There also was a 21 percent increase in first-time freshmen.

Fall statistics show a total count of 14,613 students.

"We're delighted to see such a significant increase in enrollment," said Provost Dave Eisler.

"This is the result of hard work by our faculty and staff to meet the needs of our students. Their desire to offer classes at convenient times and help students finish their degrees on schedule has contributed to our growth."

This is the third consecutive quarter budget-related enrollment has been up at WSU. "The numbers show this isn't an anomaly - this is a trend," Eisler said.

Ninety-four percent of the student body are Utah residents; 4,420 are seniors compared with 4,511 freshmen; and nearly 2,500 students are new freshmen this quarter.
