Ex-official schemed to direct funds to Carey, board finds

A board formed to fight corruption in the Teamsters says the union's former political director schemed to direct illegal funds to union President Ron Carey's re-election campaign.

The Independent Review Board alleged Wednesday that William Hamilton conspired with three Carey campaign aides to funnel union money into Carey's coffers, according to Teamsters who saw the charges. The three aides pleaded guilty on Sept. 18 to helping funnel money to Carey's campaign, and the review board charges against Hamilton were based largely on statements they made in federal court in New York in connection with their pleas.

Carey's December 1996 victory was overturned in August, and a federal overseer is deciding whether he should be disqualified because of his aides' scheme.
