Part of Chris & Dicks to close

After nearly 40 years in the hardware, lumber, custom cabinet and countertop business, Jody and Richard Paras believe this is the time to close a portion of Chris and Dick's, 1555 W. 3500 South.

They are selling hardware and lumber inventory but are retaining the custom cabinet and countertop business. Mark Wetzel, general manager, said the Parases believe the time is right for a change.Asked if the proliferation of large competitors like Eagle Hardware, Home Base and Home Depot had anything to do with the decision, Wetzel said Jody and Richard also looked at the future economic outlook for the company and realize it will be get tougher for an independent hardware store to operate.

Located on 13.5 acres, Chris & Dick's was a landmark long before West Valley City was incorporated. The Paras couple has seen the area grow up around them.

Wetzel said the company has 160 employees, and some already have found other jobs. The company is trying to place the ones not employed in the custom cabinet and countertop plants that will be expanded. He said some products not previously offered in the cabinet and countertop operations will now be carried.

The inventory sale probably will last until the end of 1997, Wetzel said, unless the items are sold quicker than that. After that some of the unoccupied buildings and land will be leased.
