Eldon Wesley Hughes, age 82, passed away in Mesquite, Nev. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1997.
He was born September 23, 1915 in Mesquite, Nevada to Charles Arthur and Orilla Luella Leavitt Hughes. He married Verde Washburn on December 22, 1942 in the St. George LDS Temple.He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as bishop of his ward in Mesquite, a full time mission as a young man in the East Central States and later in the NV Las Vegas mission with his wife. He taught school and coached athletics for 31 years. He has influenced many lives for good and has been a positive example in the lives of countless young people. Everyone that has known him has looked up to him.
He is survived by his wife, Verde; five sons and seven daughters, Verlee Peterson; Arthur Hughes; Dixie Fish; James Hughes; Thomas Hughes; Ann Imler; Susan Ruth; Hali Hughes; Marie Michelson; David Hughes; Gregory Hughes; Dorothy McConnell; four brothers, Leonard; Marion; Francis; Owen; two sisters, Vida Curry; Carmelia Hughes; 54 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 27, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Mesquite LDS Stake Center, 200 No. Arrowhead Lane. Viewing will be held Sunday, October 26, 1997 from 6-8 p.m. at the Mesquite Stake Center and again from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will be in the Mesquite City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary.
