A few autumn leaves cling to branches as Jacob Helmstetler of Rose Park hangs white Christmas lights on a tree in Temple Square in Salt Lake City. It takes about two months for Helmstetler and other workers to hang the approximately 800,000 lights on the square's trees for the annual holiday display. The lights are officially turned on during an annual ceremony held the day after Thanksgiving. The event has grown increasingly popular, both with local residents and tourists. The American Bus Association recently ranked the lighting of Temple Square among the top 100 events for North American tourists in 1998.
