4 children, 2 adults killed in Chicago apartment fire

A fire swept through an apartment building early Saturday morning, killing four children and two adults.

At least a dozen of the residents, including the parents of two of the children who were killed, were able to escape the burning building, which had no smoke detectors, authorities said.A witness, Daniel Rivera, 14, said flames shot out of a basement apartment, where the bodies of the four children - ages 13, 6, 5 and 2 - were found.

The flames ignited the upper floors of the 2 1/2-story brick building, and the bodies of two adult men were found in an attic apartment.
