Bengals win, then display lack of class

With an exciting 1-0 victory over Alta, the Brighton High girls soccer team claimed the 5A championship Saturday night.

Had there been a sportsmanship trophy, however, it would have been the Bengals getting shut out.Right after defeating their rivals, the Brighton players loudly chanted "Alta bites the dust! Alta bites the dust!"

The Kathy Kuhn-coached Bengals continued to rub it in during their victory lap. While trotting around Lindquist Field, they stopped in front of Alta's fans and did some more chanting, finger waving and posturing.

Which brings to mind a quote by famed Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne: "One man practicing good sportsmanship is far better than 50 others preaching it."

Coincidentally, Rockne's statement is printed directly below the list of previous girls soccer state champions in the Utah High School Activities Assocation handbook. And Brighton is on that list twice, having won the first two 4A titles, in 1989 and 1990.

One more coincidence - Rockne's grandson, who's also named Knute Rockne, has been a teacher and assistant football coach at Brighton for 15 years.

DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE: Twins on the top two football teams in 5A had their opponents seeing double this past weekend.

On Thursday, Skyline's Josh and Jeremy Lyman each touched pay dirt twice as the Eagles pounded Viewmont, 58-0. Jeremy scooped up a couple of fumbles and returned them for touchdowns. Josh finished with 112 yards rushing and two TDs.

On Friday, Brighton's Riley and Mitch England paired up against Orem. Mitch delivered a key downfield block to help Riley complete a nifty 33-yard reverse play for the Bengals' final touchdown in their 27-0 victory.
