Rescuers clean birds caught in goo on California beaches

Dozens of birds were killed or hurt, and rescuers had to clean the feathers of about 200 others when a mysterious oily substance washed up on beaches.

The goo, discovered Friday in large slicks in several parts of Monterey Bay, poses no danger to humans and its threat to wildlife appeared to subside over the weekend, Coast Guard Petty Officer Shannon Knight said.Knight said scientists at first thought it was sardine oil, but decided that detailed lab tests were necessary to identify the substance.
