Suns 20 15 29 25 - 89

Jazz 26 23 29 20 - 98

1st quarter: Jeff Hornacek, using his usual variety of circus shots, scores 10 points on 5-of-6 from the floor. Jacque Vaughn enters the game shooting 92 percent from the line and misses four foul shots.

2nd quarter: Highlight reel: Vaughn strips Jason Kidd clean and scores. Nine seconds later, Kidd dunks on Vaughn, taunts him and gets a technical.

3rd quarter: Greg Ostertag commits four fouls in seven minutes. Suns' Clifford Robinson nets eight points, but Phoenix can't make up any ground.

4th quarter: Rookie guard Troy Hudson plays 11 minutes, scoring seven points and dishing out two assists.

Who's hot: Hornacek had a strong all-around game with 15 points, eight assists and two steals in a preseason-high 31 minutes. Bryon Russell also scored 15 and pulled down nine rebounds with two steals.

Key to the game: The Jazz showed they can win a game without both John Stockton and Karl Malone - albeit a meaningless exhibition contest when the Suns had five players sitting out, including Kevin Johnson.

Records: Jazz finish preseason 5-3; Suns also finish 5-3.

Quotable: "We were the most talented team out there, but they beat us," Phoenix forward Clifford Robinson.

Notable: Violet Palmer, one of two female officials trying to break into the NBA lineup, worked the game. She'll find out this week whether she'll make it as a rookie referee for the upcoming regular season . . . Tom Chambers, a former Ute and Jazzman, played 10 minutes, scoring one point and pulling down three rebounds . . . Ostertag, who fouled out in 22 minutes, had more fouls than rebounds "I didn't play worth a damn this preseason," he said . . . Chris Morris played for the first time since the exhibition opener. He had two points and five boards in 16 minutes . . . Jazz second-round pick Nate Erdmann and journeyman center Greg Dreiling did not play. Utah needs to trim the roster by two players by Thursday . . . Robinson, who wore a trademark headband during his years with the Trail Blazers, didn't wear one Monday . . . Attendance: 19,861.

Next Up: at L.A. Lakers Friday, 8:30 p.m. in the regular-season opener.
