Winged Lions deal Templars their first Region 12 defeat

Playing what Coach Kendra Tomsic termed its best volleyball of the season, Rowland Hall-St. Mark's kept its Region 12 title hopes alive Thursday night with a 15-10, 15-8 victory over Manti.

Junior Jenny Rasmusson pounded out 11 kills and added seven blocks and three aces for the fifth-ranked Winged Lions (9-2), who handed the third-ranked Templars (10-1) their first loss in region play this season. The win moved Rowland Hall to within one match of region-leading Manti with three left to play. A win would have sealed at least a share of the region title for the Templars.

"We just played like we can play, finally," said a more-than-ecstatic Tomsic. "(Jenny) played an outstanding game. She was tough on the net and had some great hits."

Rasmusson played a key role during a 10-0 run in the first game that saw Rowland Hall go from a 6-4 deficit to a 14-6 advantage. The middle blocker scored points on three kills and a service winner for the Winged Lions, who locked up the first game on a block by Sara Watchorn.

Manti again took a lead in the second game at 8-5 but watched Rowland Hall put together another 10-0 run to close out the match. Rasmusson added three blocks for points and Jenna Gelegotis added two of her six kills for points during the decisive run.
