Despite an ailing right leg and the emergence of young Drew Miller, Paul Shoemaker is scheduled to start at quarterback Saturday night when BYU plays at UTEP.
Shoemaker is still hobbling after injuring his knee and ankle against TCU last week. On Wednesday, he practiced for the first time this week, working predominantly out of the shotgun formation.Shoemaker is suffering a knee strain and a sprained ankle, though the ankle is bothering him more than the knee.
"He should be ready to go Saturday," said coach LaVell Edwards. "We're going to take it day-to-day."
Miller, who sparked the Cougars to a 31-10 victory over TCU by directing four touchdown-scoring drives in the second half, will make his first collegiate start if Shoemaker can't go, but Edwards prefers having the true freshman come off the bench.
Backing up Shoemaker and Miller is Shane Barlow, a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman.
