Indiana University expels fraternity after racial prank

Fear and anger spread across the Indiana University campus because a fraternity played a prank that crossed the line, the dean of students said in handing down the harshest punishment available.

The university expelled Zeta Beta Tau on Wednesday for sending new pledges to search for 22 items, including photos of a midget, "2 chicks kissing (less clothes, more credit)" and "any funny-lookin' Mexican."The penalty was harsher than that recommended by the university's Fraternity and Judicial Board, which had suggested suspending the historically Jewish fraternity through Jan. 1, 2000, followed by a year of probation.
