Poets encouraged to submit entries for BYU competition

Area poets are encouraged to submit their entries to the annual Eisteddfod Poetry Competition at Brigham Young University celebrating Welsh traditions.

Two categories will be available for entry. The chair competition, "Losing One's Way," requires a poem or ode of more than 50 lines and fewer than 150 lines. The crown competition, "City Canyons," is a lyric poem of no more than 100 lines.Entries for the 1998 competition will be accepted until Dec. 10, 1997.

Welsh tradition dictates that entries be submitted under a pseudonym to ensure the judges' decisions are unbiased. The College of Humanities continues with this tradition requiring a sealed envelope, with the pseudonym on the outside, containing the name, address, telephone number and social security number of the competitor.

The submissions should be sent to Eisteddfod Poetry Competition, College of Humanities, 2054 JKHB, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602. The competition requires a $3 entry fee for each poem, and no entries will be returned.

The winners of the competition will receive $300 and will be honored at the annual college banquet on Jan. 14. Winners will be "chaired" and "crowned" during the dinner. For more information, contact Lance Larsen at 801-378-8104.
