Applications are being accepted for a federal program that helps pay heating bills for low-income people.
The Department of Community and Economic Development operates the Home Energy Assistance Target (HEAT) program, which begins Nov. 3.Over the next two weeks, officials will take applications from people who are elderly or disabled. Others can apply on Nov. 17.
HEAT offers a one-time payment made directly to the utility company based on the household's income and energy bills. Households with an elderly person or a child under the age of six may qualify for additional help.
Applications are available at senior citizen centers, utility companies and community service agen-cies. Home visits are available for those who are homebound. For more information call:
