Highland super-powers past Cyprus

Highland High is a team of Supermen, and Cyprus, like five previous Highland opponents, couldn't find any Kryptonite as the Rams rolled to the 58-3 Region 3 victory in prep football action Friday night.

The Supermen:- Quarterback Dave Black threw for three touchdowns (2, 93 and 14 yards) and ran (1 yard) for another.

- Morgan Scalley racked up close to 100 yards, despite not scoring.

- The offensive line of Raigan Steele, Steve Myers, Jake Olson, Andrew Cannon and Mike Poelman led the Rams to more than 300 yards of total offense.

- Tight end Sid Baucom had six catches for 95 yards and a TD.

- The defense, anchored by tackle Moses Mailei, caused three turnovers and held the Pirates to just three points.

- Kicker Ryan Plewe was a perfect 6-for-6 in extra-points and 1-for-1 in field goal tries.

The Rams proved unstoppable, and they're gaining momentum.

"We got better with consistency," Highland coach Larry Wilson said. "We played four solid quarters, and we hadn't done that up until this point."

With the victory the Rams move to 6-0 and 5-0 in Region 5 play, while the Pirates fall to 3-2 in league play and 4-2 overall.

The Pirates can say they had the lead over heavily favored Highland, though it was for just four minutes. Chad Larsen nailed a 45-yard field goal with four minutes to go in the first quarter, but that was all.

Black gave the Rams the lead for good with a 1-yard run with :20 seconds left in the first quarter.

A Dave Anderson fumble recovery on a bad punt snap, a Baucom 2-yard TD catch, a Nick Sorensen 17-yard run and a 27-yard Plewe field goal in the second quarter made it 31-3 at the break.

Christian Frech, Jeremy Clegg, Ranara Sitake and Lance Aguirre also had touchdowns for the Rams in the second half.
