October is breast cancer awareness month

Gov. Mike Leavitt signed a proclamation last week declaring October as breast cancer awareness month in Utah.

According to the American Cancer Society, 820 Utah women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 200 will die from the disease in 1997. One of out of every eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.Early detection improves the outcome of the disease. The American Cancer Society recommends women perform monthly breast exams beginning at age 20, receive a clinical breast exam every three years between ages 20 and 40, and have a clinical breast exam and a mammogram every year after 40.
