Church announces 5 new temples

The announcement of two full-size temples and three smaller temples during the general priesthood session continues the brisk pace that President Gordon B. Hinckley has set for such construction. He has dedicated 25 temples during his tenure in the church's First Presidency, the most recent one in St. Louis, Mo., in June.

Since its founding, the church has focused on the importance of temple worship, completing a temple in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836, and another in Nauvoo, Ill., in 1846, before persecution forced the Saints west to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake.Saturday's announcement of plans to build two full-size temples near Houston, Texas, and in Porto Alegre, Brazil, adds to those now under construction in Colombia; Ecuador; the Dominican Republic; Spain; Recife and Campinas, Brazil; Mexico; Boston; New York; and Albuquerque.

In Houston, 20 acres in the Houston suburb of Spring have been selected. Construction is expected to begin within a year and will take about two years to complete.
