Cuban tourism gets boost with debut of Club Med

French tourism group Club Mediterranee has opened a hotel in the Cuban resort of Varadero, becoming the latest foreign firm with a stake in the island's growing tourism sector.

Club Med president Philippe Bourgignon and Cuban Vice-President Carlos Lage attended the formal opening Saturday of the 319-room hotel, run jointly with Cuban state hotel firm Gaviota.Club Med, with 64,000 hotel rooms worldwide, has joined a string of foreign firms that have entered the Cuban tourism sector since the early 1990s, such as Spain's Sol Melia and Tryp chains and Jamaica's Superclubs.
