James Beard Society preserves culinary arts

Founded in 1986 by Julia Child and the late Peter Kump, the James Beard Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the country's culinary heritage.

The foundation, located in the late Beard's Greenwich Village brownstone - the nation's only historic culinary landmark - aims to foster appreciation and development of gastronomy by recognizing and promoting excellence in all aspects of the culinary arts. The foundation accomplishes this mission through a full calendar of events at the Beard House, including membership to an elite "restaurant" where dinners are prepared by top chefs who have been invited to cook at the Beard House.
