A West Valley man was critically injured Monday when he was struck by a car while crossing a street.
Ronald Gagne, 19, was hit about 6 a.m. while crossing the street at 3900 S. State, said Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy Mike Leary.Gagne was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by Darlene J. Anderson, 54, Leary said. He was taken to University Hospital, where he remained in serious but stable condition Tuesday.
"This is a unique crash because there does appear to be speed involved and some (error) on the pedestrian's part," Leary said. "But that's pending an investigation."
Leary said the man was crossing the street against traffic. Anderson, who had a green light, told deputies she had been stopped at a red light and just started through the intersection when the accident occurred, Leary said.
But a witness account and the vehicle's speedometer indicated the vehicle was traveling at 60 mph - 20 mph over the posted speed limit, Leary said. No citations were issued, and an investigation continues.
The incident follows several other auto-pedestrian collisions on State Street in recent weeks. Leary notes that traffic on the street has increased fivefold during I-15 reconstruction and warns pedestrians and motorists to be on the lookout.
