How many tourists overstay? House panel wants to know

The House Judiciary Committee wants the Justice Department to find out how many tourists remain in the United States illegally after their visas expire.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service estimates the number at 2.1 million.About 41 percent of the approximately 5 million illegal immigrants living permanently in the United States are people who entered legally but failed to leave when their travel documents expired, the INS has said.

The House panel approved a bill Tuesday that includes a direction to the Justice Department to determine how many tourists overstay.
