Mike Leavitt.Joyner-Kersee, who will speak Thursday at Abravanel Hall, also will open the youth sessions of the conference. The half-day session, organized by the newly formed Youth Issues Alliance, will include sessions on cultural diversity. Her appearance is sponsored by UEA, the Utah State Office of Education and the American Cancer Society.

"I think there's a wide variety of things that will appeal not only to educators but the general public. Hopefully, they'll come away with a great understanding of the health and safety issues we're dealing with in public schools," said UEA spokesman Mark Mickelsen.

Mickelsen said 8,000 to 15,000 educators are expected to attend the event.
