U.S. warning Iraqis again about violating no-fly zone

Defense Secretary William Cohen is warning Iraq again about sending warplanes into southern Iraq in violation of a no-fly zone patrolled by the United States, Great British and France.

"We intend to enforce the no-fly zone, and we have communicated this to the Iraqis," Cohen said Wednesday at a news conference. He also said the United States was trying to make it more difficult for Saddam Hussein's government to fly over southern Iraq, but provided no details.

Cohen gave no indication what the United States may do if the flights continue in the zone that was placed off-limits to protect Shiite Muslims from Baghdad attacks. Other administration officials also have declined to tip their hand.

No actions have been taken in the skies over southern Iraq so far.
