An architect will soon be hired to design a $19 million multievents center in Richfield.

Preliminary planning information and time lines have been announced by the Sevier Valley Applied Technology Center and Sevier School District. The programming phase was launched 10 months ago and officials are working toward determining the size and scope of the building within budget constraints. The architect will meet with individuals and groups to get public input related to the use, location, functions and final design of the facility. Representatives from the technology center and school district are presenting information about the facility to various civic and government groups.

Design work should be complete by March. Construction could begin as soon as April. The facility could be finished by the year 2000.

The facility could include a 800-seat performing arts theater and a special events arena that would seat between 1,000 and 5,000 spectators. About 18 classrooms would be available for local educational institutions.

Sevier School District has pledged $2 million toward the project from a $16.5 million bond election and $1.5 million was appropriated by the Utah Legislature. Local officials also plan to solicit a low-interest federal loan for the project. The project will also depend on large donations from private sources.
