BYU honors an educator and a social worker

SHARE BYU honors an educator and a social worker

The School of Social Work Alumni Association of Brigham Young University recently honored the first recipients of its John R. Christiansen Honored Alumni Award and W. Eugene Gibbons Honored Alumni Award.

John R. Christiansen, for whom the award was named, received the 1997 John R. Christiansen award. He was chairman of the BYU sociology department in 1969 when social work was added to the department."He was a fatherly mentor to many students, including some who have returned as faculty," said Lynn Pehrson, director of the School of Social Work.

Donna Crawley, a clinical social worker at the Children's Justice Center, received the 1997 W. Eugene Gibbons Award.

Crawley works with both victims and perpetrators at the center. She also serves on the board of Friends of the Children's Justice Center and the Utah County Child Abuse Council. She has been honored as Child Advocate of the Year and Utah County Employee of the Month.
