Mike Keenan earned his first win as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks as Alexander Mogilny scored two goals in a 4-1 victory.

The win gave Vancouver a three-game unbeaten streak after losing 10 straight. The Hurricanes had their three-game winning streak snapped.Keenan replaced Tom Renney as coach of the Canucks on Thursday, after Vancouver had opened the season with a 3-13-2 record. Keenan's Canucks tied Anaheim on Friday in his debut behind the bench.

Kirk McLean made 22 saves to earn his third win of the season in goal for Vancouver.

Rangers 4, Avalanche 1

At New York, Pat LaFontaine scored a goal and assisted on three others, leading the New York Rangers over the Colorado Avalanche.

LaFontaine's line, with the rejuvenated Alexei Kovalev skating on the right wing, netted two second-period goals that put the Rangers ahead for good and evened the team's home record at 4-4-4.

Goaltender Mike Richter had a big game, stopping 26 shots, and New York's penalty killers stopped the Avalanche on four power plays. The Rangers have allowed only one goal in the last 27 power plays against them.
