The annual Deseret News Sub for Santa program needs help. Families, businesses, church and civic groups who want to "adopt" needy families for Christmas can call the Sub for Santa hotline starting Monday.
Deseret News Sub for Santa is one of several programs under the umbrella of the Christmas Coordinating Council for Salt Lake County, whose purpose is to maximize resources and avoid duplication.Over 500 families need to be placed by the Deseret News Sub for Santa program before Christmas. Families with two parents, single parents and from one to 10 children age 16 and younger are now waiting for assistance. Every effort will be made to make matches compatible with the desires of "Substitute Santas."
The suggested level of help is $50 to $75 in gifts for each child plus a Christmas dinner for the family.
In particular, many "Substitute Santas" are needed this year who speak some Spanish.
The Deseret News Sub for Santa program will accept phone calls Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Sub for Santa hotline number is 236-6060.
Anyone needing Christmas help should visit the Christmas Center at 421 W. 300 South in Salt Lake City during business hours.
