Members of the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau executive committee reaffirmed their support Thursday for chief executive officer Rick Davis in the wake of the controversy surrounding a gift of beer to visiting journalists.
"We did make one mistake, and we did receive a lot of publicity because of that," Davis told the board, referring to including beer in gift bags hand- ed out to journalists attending last month's U.S. Olympic Committee media summit. In a Nov. 3 memo to the full board of trustees, Davis had acknowledged members' concerns that the bureau was "playing up the availability of alcohol and . . . playing down the importance of the LDS Church to our community."
Thursday, he described the two bottles of locally brewed beer given to journalists as being handed out indiscriminately, although non-alcoholic beverages were available at bureau-sponsored events during the summit.
